El trabajo de Serena Brito confronta la relación entre el cuerpo y la mirada, explorando lo que ocurre cuando una persona deja de existir únicamente como objeto de deseo y comienza a reclamar su propia imagen. Sus obras utilizan la distorsión, el reflejo y la superficie cromada para devolver la mirada hacia quien la recibe, revelando las tensiones acumuladas entre ser observada y ser conocida.
Lo que emerge no es una corrección de la imagen, sino una recuperación de autonomía. A partir de su experiencia con una reducción mamaria radical, Brito transforma una historia de objetificación en un acto de autoría corporal. El cuerpo deja de responder a las expectativas ajenas y comienza a redefinirse desde sus propias necesidades, deseos y límites.
En la obra de Brito, el reflejo no devuelve una imagen estable. Devuelve la experiencia de habitar un cuerpo que ha sido visto durante mucho tiempo por otros, y la posibilidad de finalmente verlo por una misma.
Serena Brito’s work confronts the relationship between the body and the gaze, exploring what happens when a person ceases to exist solely as an object of desire and begins reclaiming their own image. Through distortion, reflection, and mirrored surfaces, her work turns the gaze back toward its source, revealing the accumulated tensions between being looked at and being truly known.
What emerges is not a correction of the image, but a recovery of autonomy. Drawing from her experience of radical breast reduction surgery, Brito transforms a history of objectification into an act of bodily authorship. The body stops responding to external expectations and begins redefining itself according to its own needs, desires, and boundaries.
In Brito’s work, reflection does not return a stable image. It returns the experience of inhabiting a body that has long been seen by others—and the possibility of finally seeing it for oneself.
